On top of everything else…I might have INSOMNIA!

Insomnia

Help!!!!

Like…seriously…I need your help!

This morning, I watched the sun come up.

NOPE…I wasn’t at an amazing party with the most remarkable group of friends having so much fun that we completely lost track of time and next thing you know, it’s 6 a.m! In fact, I can’t even begin to think how long it’s been since that has even happened.

And NOPE, I didn’t get up early, head to the beach with a tea in hand to watch the brilliant sunset come up over the horizon in anticipation of a glorious new day.

Neither of these things happened.

Instead, I went to bed at around eleven, snoozed for about 40 minutes or so…then apparently, that was the end of it.

At 2 a.m, I was having a bath and texting with a friend who’d just gotten home from a night downtown.

At 4 a.m, I went to the kitchen and grabbed a banana…running into my kid in the hallway on her way to the bathroom who looked at my banana-eating self like I was from another planet.

At 6 a.m, I texted with a friend who’s vacationing in Barcelona.

And in between all of that, I watched a full season of Netflix’s “Baby Ballroom” in hopes that I would drift off to sleep somewhere between the waltz and the cha-cha.

6:15 was the last time I looked at the clock and I’m beyond thankful, that my kid knew enough to come in and remove the dog this morning then close my door behind her so I could get a few hours sleep!

For the last three weeks, I’m in full on INSOMNIA mode! I have a sinus infection and some hip issues that seem to be adding to the discomfort…but I seem to have fallen into this dreadful pattern where most nights, I’m having a bath at 2 and then eventually, I fall asleep around 4. Last night however, was one for the record books!

I’m heading to the doctor this week to see if anything can be done and to tick off the boxes on just one more medical issue that seems to be coming at me in spades these days.

In the meantime…any and all advice is appreciated?! Comment with all of your tips and tricks!

PS – Baby Ballroom…not as bad as you’d think!

  1. Get yourself a weighted blanket. Seriously. I had the same thing going on until I got myself a weighted blanket, and now I sleep like there’s no tomorrow.

  2. Hi Colleen . When I have insomnia I get up and do some quilting. Not easy these nights because of my shoulder injury. I have a friend who bakes cookies in the middle of the night . I have heard people say that soft meditation music is very relaxing and tends to put you to sleep.good luck with finding a solution .Love Aunt BettyP

  3. Hi Colleen, I’m now 52 and the last three years were filled with a wide variety of aches and pains and moments where I wasn’t sure I was in my own body anymore. Perimenopause. Oh joy. Now just plain old menopause – the joy continues. My lower back and hips screamed at night and after pursuing all sorts of avenues and appointments I was told I have good old fashioned arthritis and was given a glorious prescription for naproxen. Life is good again. If you are interested in any other things I’ve figured out which have helped feel free to email me. I represent NO companies and get paid by nobody. Just been there, done that. Hang in there!! -Jenn

  4. I suffered from insomnia for years, from university through the toddler years. When I was diagnosed with depression my doctor gave me one month’s worth of sleeping pills and said, use these for a couple of weeks to get yourself back on a pattern. That one month did it.

Also, I now listen to a Sleep Easy subliminal music file every night with my earbuds. I can sleep fine without it, but it’s very relaxing and I seem to get a deeper sleep. Check out SpeedZen online.

Oh…and I often put a sleepy time lavender blend oil in my diffuser at night. I get mine from Sage & Sweetgrass in Cole Harbour, it’s MUCH nicer than the ones at the mall.

  5. Hi Colleen: I go through many periods of days at a time when I can’t sleep and I find the best thing to do is not fight it. I find the more upset you get by not sleeping, the worse it gets. I usually get up and read, make a tea and some toast and after a few hours I can fall asleep again. I don’t think any electronic item whether it be your TV or laptop is a good idea when you can’t sleep. I think that just keeps you more wired.
