Why Every Entrepreneur Should Invest in a Brand Photo Shoot

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: if you run your own business, you need a brand photo shoot.

Over the years, I’ve participated in quite a few of these shoots both for myself and for my clients. Why? Because whether you’re building a website, refreshing your branding, or showing up consistently on socials, having high-quality photos makes a huge difference. These photos allow you to confidently show up online, tell your story, and attract the right audience for your business.

I recently wrapped a brand photo shoot to get ready for my new website (launching soon!) and wanted to walk you through the steps I always follow to get the most out of the experience.

1. Start with Strategy

Before you even think about what to wear or how to pose, take time to think through the same questions you ask yourself when building your marketing strategy:

  • Who am I trying to reach?
  • What am I selling or promoting?
  • What makes me unique?
  • How do I want people to feel when they see my photos?

These questions are the foundation of your shoot… just like they are for your marketing strategy.

2. Style with Intention

Once your brand vibe is clear, it’s time to talk clothes. Your outfit choices should align with your brand personality. Are you aiming for polished and professional? Relaxed and approachable? Bold and creative?

I usually aim for a variety of looks… making sure everything is clean, ironed, clear of cat fur, and ready to go. I bring all my options to the shoot and lay them out so outfit changes are quick and seamless.

3. Bring in the Hair and Make-up Pros (Trust Me!)

You want to look like you… just your best, most camera-ready version. That’s why I always recommend hiring a professional makeup artist who knows how to work with lighting, skin tone, and camera angles.

For this shoot, I worked with the incredibly talented Vicky Mina Makeup. Vicky is a true artist who knows how to create makeup that photographs and films beautifully but still feels like you. Her approach is all about enhancing your natural features so you feel elevated but never overdone. It’s a gift, and it made such a difference in how confident I felt during the shoot.

And, while I always suggest make-up, it’s also a perfect time to get a fresh cut or blow-out, and book a mani/pedi for the full effect!

4. Choose a Photographer You Trust

A great photographer will not only make you look good… they’ll make you feel good throughout the process. I’ve worked with and recommended Michelle from Michelle Doucette Photography (for brand shoots and product photography) for years, and for good reason.

Michelle has a way of making you feel totally at ease in front of the camera (which, let’s be honest, can be awkward). She gives just the right amount of direction, works quickly and efficiently, and somehow always captures the best version of you… not just how you look, but how you are. Her turnaround is fast, her communication is professional, and her talent is unbelievable. I can’t recommend her enough.

5. Pick the Right Location

The backdrop of your shoot matters just as much as your outfit. Your location should reflect the tone of your brand and help tell your story. For our most recent shoot, we headed to Queensland Beach to enjoy a little time at The Beach Loft… and it was the perfect choice. The casual, beachy vibe aligned beautifully with the relaxed, approachable feel I was aiming for.

Renting a space like this gives you more control over lighting, background, and overall aesthetic. Plus, it’s fun! Whether you’re shooting indoors, outdoors, or both… choose a setting that feels like you.

Bonus: While the cottage is great for photo shoots (renting at $65/hour in the off season) – you can also rent this stunning cottage for a getaway with friends and family. Find The Beach Loft on AirBnB.

6. Create a Shot List

Even the most relaxed, lifestyle-inspired shoots benefit from a little structure. A shot list helps ensure you don’t forget anything important… especially if you’re juggling multiple outfits, props, or brand elements. Your photographer can often guide you through this but think about:

  • Headshots
  • Working shots (laptop, phone, notebook)
  • Details (hands on a coffee cup, close-ups of jewelry, etc.)
  • Lifestyle images (walking, laughing, interacting with your environment)
  • Branding elements (with your logo, signage, or tools of your trade)

I often put together a pinterest board with examples of shots I like or at the very least, some screen shots in an album to share with the photographer. You don’t need to script every moment, but you’ll thank yourself later when you have beautiful, on-brand photos ready to go for social posts, newsletters, website updates and more.

7. Bring Props That Help Tell Your Story

Think about what you want people to know about you and your business. I always bring my laptop, notebooks, my phone (with the screen on my own brand), a tea mug that matches the aesthetic, and anything else that represents my day-to-day work. These little details help people connect to your story and make your visuals feel authentic.

Think of it as setting the scene. Are you someone who works from cozy coffee shops, or do you thrive in organized studio spaces? Let the details reflect that.

8. Be Yourself and Have Fun

Sounds simple, but it’s crucial. People connect with people. If you feel nervous, remind yourself why you’re doing this… to show up authentically and confidently in your business. Trust your prep work, trust your team, and let your personality shine. The best photos often come when you’re relaxed and having a bit of fun.

Final Thoughts

At the heart of it, a brand photo shoot isn’t just about pretty pictures. It’s about showing up for your business. It’s about putting your best foot forward with intention, professionalism, and confidence.

It’s saying: I’m here, I’m ready, and I believe in what I’m building.

And if you’re anything like me and my clients, you’ll walk away from a brand photo shoot not only with a gallery of beautiful images, but also with a renewed sense of pride and excitemtent about your business and the work you do.

If you’ve been thinking about booking a shoot for your business, let this be your sign.

Big thanks again to:
