Living Life to the Fullest…Kathy McNab #KIAWorkingMom

Whether catching a fish, vacationing in Florida, hosting a party, lunching with girlfriends, bicycling with the grandkids, volunteering or throwing caution to the wind…Kathy McNab believes wholeheartedly in living life to the very fullest.

Residing in an active and vibrant community near a golf course, Kathy leads the weekly “Ladies Night” and enjoys both the game and the time spent with friends. With multiple strong women in her life, she enjoys monthly lunches and bi-annual nights away…creating memories with women she truly feels lucky to call friends.

While she feels lucky to have strong women in her life, it’s women like Kathy that we’re all grateful to know.

As the Fund Development and Communications Officer at Adsum for Women & Children, Kathy plays a key role in ensuring that women and children in our community are well taken care of. With a lengthy career in Management and Sales behind her, Kathy considered retirement but instead, took her skills and decided to work in not-for-profit. She meets regularly with folks in HRM…kids, families, church groups and businesses…all who want to help enrich the lives of others.

While Kathy’s job is mostly during daytime hours, she’s often seen in a cocktail dress and heels at an Adsum fundraising event.

Or leggings and sneakers…whatever’s required!

Full of energy, Kathy typically starts her morning with a run or workout a few days a week…enjoying the quiet time as she makes her way through the neighbourhood before the busy-ness of the day ahead. By evening, when not attending fundraising events, Kathy enjoys arriving home to a lovely meal her husband has prepared…and typically, finishes her evening curled in bed with a favourite book (she just finished all 6 Donna Morrissey novels and is about to start the newest Lisbeth Salander book.)

On weekends, Kathy and her husband find time for golf, neighbourhood socials, family gatherings and weekends away. They love to entertain at home and especially enjoy spontaneous dinner parties on their deck.

“This summer, we hosted my sisters 60th with 45 at a sit down dinner and dancing on the outside deck until three! Kids were in the pool until midnight and the cousins camped out together. We had 23 for a sleepover and it was the first time we were under the same roof since the mid seventies. Those who didn’t spend the night, were back for brunch and fun around the pool the next morning. It was a wonderful time making memories all of us will cherish.

With three children and five grandchildren under ten, Kathy enjoys having everyone living near by and spends as much time as possible with her family.

Born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, she’s one of 6 siblings and several cousins who’ve remained close through the years…the annual visit to Newfoundland is always a special event. Along with her visits back to the Island, Kathy and her husband enjoy weekends with friends in Chester (where they someday plan to retire), winter relaxation at their home in Florida and a yearly trip to a sunny location each November to celebrate their anniversary.

Kathy is living proof that working hard, playing harder and giving back to the community around you…provides a life that’s rich beyond measure.

She’s truly taking advantage, of all life has to give!

It’s #GivingTuesday and as part of the festivities, Kathy and many wonderful volunteers (including her youngest daughter Alexandra) will be acting as “Adsum Angels.” The angels will be in the community throughout the day raising money and passing out goodies.

If you’re looking for a way to give back to the community through Adsum, here are a few ways you can contribute:

  • All day…click the Donate Now button to make a donation on-line to Adsum for Women & Children
  • 7:30 to 9:00 am – Keep your eye out for “Adsum Angels” collecting road toll donations on Gottingen and North Streets.
  • 9:00 am to 5:00 pm – They’ll be accepting monetary donations and “new” clothing, toys and personal care items for Christmas at the Adsum House location, 2421 Brunswick St., Halifax.
  • 10:00 am to 2:00 pm – The “Adsum Angels” will be selling “Raising the Roof 2018” toques at the Scotia Square Community Booth (near the food court). Sales of the toques and ball caps help fund solutions to homelessness.
  • 2:45 pm to 4:00 pm – The “Adsum Angels” will be sharing the warmth of hot chocolate and candy canes as everyone enjoys a little Christmas music at The Alders by Adsum, 2380 Gottingen St., Halifax.

Adsum operates four Halifax locations – an emergency shelter, second-stage housing and two apartments complexes where housing is supportive and affordable. They house more than 100 people every single day and improve the lives of more than 1,000 people each and every year with their programs and services.
